FSC Certified or Recycled Paper, What’s the Best Choice?

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been a key point on corporate agenda’s for many years now. Self regulatory assurances that the company will conduct business in an ethical way – both in terms of employees, the wider community and the environment.

Being a print management business, we are often asked to source recycled stock as a way of achieving an environmental tick on the CSR checklist. However, recycled paper may not always be the best choice when considering environmentally friendly options.

Of course, recycling is bigger today than it has ever been before, and it absolutely has its place. Only sometimes, the processes that products need to go through in order to be repurposed, can often cause more harm than good.

All paper production demands a process, but with recycled paper production, there are additional processes and chemicals involved. De-inking and whitening for example. There is also the increased energy consumption required to power these processes. And of course the risk of water pollution if the results from these processes are discharged into waterways, polluting rivers and harming ecosystems.

If asked by a customer on the most environmentally friendly choice for materials – we advise that we only ever source FSC certified stock, which in our opinion, is the very best choice available.

FSC (The Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC operates a global certification system, for both forest management as well as chain of custody.

Choosing FSC certified materials guarantees that harvested trees are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally. That parts of the forest are protected entirely, in order to safeguard rare animals and plants. That any sacred spots within a forest, are exempt from felling, protecting the rights of indigenous people. And that all wood is tracked from forest to store, every link certified, making it clearly identifiable which forest products are certified and which aren’t.
